Helena with laurel wreath
Lot 1696
Helena, Augusta, 324-328/30. Follis (Bronze, 16 mm, 1.67 g, 7 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri, after 326. IIVIEOI [...] AVG Laureate (sic!), diademed and draped bust of Helena to right. Rev. PN XDV [...] / [...] Pax standing front, head to left, holding branch in her right hand and longs scepter in her left. Cf. RIC 90 (for prototype). An unusual imitation of curiously blundered style. About extremely fine.

From the Tetrarchy Collection, formed over the past twenty-five years.

The artist working on the dies of this curious imitation apparently mixed the hairdress (and a reverse type) of Helena with the laurel wreath and facial features of an Augustus.
